A Review of Lagos Comic Con 2017

Well, well, well! It’s been yet another eventful, colourful, and packed-full Lagos Comic Con. The turn out was quite massive, and in my opinion; the population…that was in attendance  in this edition (the 6th actually), was a notch higher than that of last year. It was indeed an exciting moment for the Nigerian comic and animation industry.

These are truly exciting times for the Nigerian entertainment industry. It seems as if there’s been a mini or rather gradual exodus of talents of Nigerian extraction, from overseas, back to the motherland. And they all seem eager and ready to showcase the wealth of knowledge and experience that they have acquired from their respective sojourns abroad. And the Comic, Animation, and Visual Effects Industry in Nigeria, isn’t left out at all in all of this. And with the likes of Komotion Studios joining the already burgeoning mix of animation studios in Nigeria, one can only imagine how huge the industry would be in a couple of years from now.

This year’s edition…had the likes of Laide Agunbiade, a Hollywood-based veteran visual effects artist and technician, in attendance as a speaker. He is one whose job portfolio will definitely leave your jaws dropping; yeah, literally. Other guest speakers included, Kola Olarewaju, a 3D animator and founder of Komotion Studios; Brian O. Wilson, an animator; Eri Umusu, a CG artist with Anthill Studios; Nurdin Momodu, a 3D artist with Anthill Studios, and more.

Last year’s edition of the Lagos Comic Con was the first time I ever attended a comic con. And this edition saw me in attendance as both a volunteer and a freelance creative writer for the organizer’s blog, “Comic Panel Blog”. It’s certainly a way of saying that, just as this edition of the Lagos Comic Con is a significant improvement from that of last year. So has my participation…also.

This brings me to the pros and the cons of this year’s edition, in comparison to the last edition.
The pros for me were, *the heavy presence of animators & visual effects artists, unlike last year; and *the presence of more comic book publishers and titles.
The cons for me were *the main auditorium being a bit rowdy at some point, as there were just too many activities going on at the same time. *And the absence of game developers and publishers was quite glaring too.

In all, I feel and think that the Lagos Comic Con has finally come of age, going by the amount of comic-philes, and big comic heads it pooled for this edition. It can only get better than this, from this point on.

Kudos to Ayodele Elegba, Ray Anyasi, and the rest of the Spoof Animation crew for organizing this. Thanks to all the sponsors and partners, especially those who didn’t chicken out in the last minutes…. Thanks also, to ace visual artist, Adebimpe Adebambo for hooking the organizers up with Laide Agunbiade.

I look forward to a bigger and better 7th edition of the Lagos Comic Con, and a rapid growth of the Industry too, especially investment-wise. So, here’s me saying: “see you at the next edition!” Bless ✌!
