Song Review: My Sugar Cane by Belle Lynda

Belle Lynda is a Port-Harcourt – based eclectic Singer. She has been quite active in the music industry in Port-Harcourt City, for a while now. It is her latest single, “My Sugar Cane” that I’ll be reviewing today.

So, My Sugar Cane was produced by Ayzed, who happens to have produced Mr 2kay’s Bad Girl Special remix featuring Cynthia Morgan and Seyi Shay. He’s also been a one time producer for Kelly Hansome.

My Sugar Cane starts with a mid tempo percussion with a traditional Afropop and Highlife feel. The use of the xylophone effect is felt at successive intervals in this song. The piano strings ensemble effect is also used to good effect. Then there is the lush melodious guitar riff that soars, and gives the vocals a good ambience at well-timed intervals. The tom-tom sounds also help to enhance the afro-centric vibe of this song.

Belle Lynda’s voice texture is quite remarkable. It has this ethereal vibe to it. Her vocal dexterity is such that her vocals virtually ring out in a reverberating manner, which resonates across the entire track. Her vocals happen to be the best thing to happen to this song. Unlike the case nowadays, where the beat seems to overshadow the vocals of the singer.

The only downside to this song, in my opinion, is the production quality. It has the potential to be even more better than it is now. Yes the producer did a decent job on this one, but it could have been better. My biggest grouse with it, is the quasi-syncopated beats of the xylophone that ends up distracting the listener from the harmony of the melody, thus dampening the listening experience. For a richer auditory experience, a versatile producer would have handled this song best.

In all, My Sugar Cane is the kind of song you want to drive, lounge and sing-along to. It’s a song you’d like to give a listen to, especially because of Belle Lynda’s luscious voice.

I rate this song 3 stars out of 5.

Enjoy!
