MUSIC REVIEW: 'One Step Back' by John Dust

Lagos based, alternative RnB/Soul singer, John Dust, has just released a new single.

He titles this one, 'One Step Back'. And it was produced by Michael Prodigy, a Lagos based budding producer.

One Step Back tells a story about a guy who isn't quite sure about the feelings he has for his lady. He is clearly scared of being committed to their relationship. He tells her that he is yet to figure out if he actually loves her enough to commit...perhaps because of his previous experiences in relationships.

The lyrics is the winner here,  because of the way it makes its prosaic words sound poetic, and the powerful message it carries. It's not everyday you hear a guy talk about his phobia for commitment. It's something a lot of guys would rather not talk about. It's a good break from the norm (of love nwanti-nti lyrics).

The use of tambourine chimes in place of a conventional percussion beat (the 808s of this world), works pretty well. The velvety piano cords flow in wavy rings, to give off a soothing soft pillow background feel. The bass was not quite pronounced, but this doesn't really do any harm to the harmony that you feel in the music of this song. The rippling female vocal echoes also work very well.

In all, there isn't really much to fault, when you listen carefully to this song. If there's anything to fault at all, then it has to be 2 things: John doesn't take much vocal risks, of flexing the dexterity of his voice. The lyrics are quite few; they could have been fuller. The mixing of the instruments sounds could have been more distinct.

I say, John has done a pretty good job on this song. I rate this song 3.5 stars out 5.
