The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), also known as Industrial Training(I.T) was established by ITF
in 1973 to solve the problem of lack of adequate practical skills
preparatory for employment in industries by Nigerian graduates of
tertiary institutions.
The Scheme exposes
students to industry based skills necessary for a smooth transition from
the classroom to the Labour Market. It affords students of tertiary
institutions the opportunity of being familiarized and exposed to the
needed experience in handling machinery and equipment which are usually
not available in the educational institutions.
However, due to the scourge of corruption that has eaten deep into the Fabric of every sector in the Country, the Students seem to be on the receiving end of the irregularities that have threatened to destroy the Objectives and Significance of SIWES/I.T :
Objectives of SIWES:
- To provide an avenue for students in the Nigerian universities to acquire industrial skill and experience on their course of study.
- To prepare students for the work situation they are likely to face after graduation.
- To expose students to opportunities to apply their theoretical knowledge in real work situation.
Significance:
- It helps to develop the intellectual skills of the students as they are often allowed to take and decisions and provide appropriate solutions to problems they may encounter.
- It also affords students the opportunity to interact with a large spectrum of people in the industrial set up.
